Why Fair Court Rim Testing Is Essential In Today’s Game
Friday, January 18, 2019
We’ve all seen a player make a slam dunk, and impressively hang from the rim before landing on the court in victory. But what does it symbolize? While it may drive the crowds wild, it is appreciated less by the court maintenance crew as it can damage the court. Without theatric displays, rims are subject to substantial wear and tear considering long distance shots or high speed shots. Much like every other piece of athletic equipment we use they get worn out after certain durations. If they are left unattended the stress and impact of the ball would eventually compromise the integrity of the structure of the rim. This would give an uneven playing field therefore inadvertently giving an advantage to the home team.
The Technique
The Fair-Court rim testing system is a basic and very easy system that was designed specifically to prevent issues like this from running the court obsolete or damaged. The testers measure the rim’s performance and provide instant digital results.
The test is so simple as a matter of fact that there is absolutely no need to climb a ladder or get a measuring tape as this new system has rendered all of those previous methods obsolete.
Set up and testing is quick and easy:
- Before each use you are supposed to place the tester on a solid floor and calibrate it to the settings of the flat surface and height.
- Attach the tester hook to the rim which would not require a ladder to set up.
- Now all you are required to do here is drop the weight and read the digital meter which would display all the requirements and whether or not they are fulfilled with this candidate.
The tester is so powerful that it will measure the height of the rim along with other stats including the velocity of the rebound off the compression spring, which is inside the housing of the unit. Once the results are displayed you can record them and test them against standards. Now you are supposed to repeat the same test in the exact same way on the opposite end of the court making sure both the rims are plum.
Interpreting The Results
The NCAA and FIBA require that the elasticity of the rim be within 35-50% energy-absorption range of total impact energy. The display shows figures as decimals, so your results should be within .350 -.500.
In addition, the rims on each side court must be within 5% of each other, meaning there is no more than a difference of .05 in the results.
The Reason Why This Is Important
The idea is to ensure the fairness of the game is not compromised therefore enabling the teams to take advantage of every handicap they have available to them. This usually proves to be a rather strong reason due to the serious nature of the test. Players tend to make mistakes during the game and it is more and more evident. If one can justify the accuracy of the court and other intricacies ensuring there is no chance of errors in these cases. This case has happened before in sports entertainment. This was last recorded with the legendary Abedi Pele when he had called out a football shot that he made that ended up hitting the pole but his claim proved the football post was incorrectly placed which did not meet the standards of the FIFA.
